I just got a puppy. What pet insurance do you recommend?

I use Lemonade for my dog and cat, and it turned out to be the cheapest option when I got multiple quotes using a comparison website. The price seemed reasonable, and their app was super easy to use for signing up. I just had to provide some basic info and upload my vet’s document, and my dog was covered.

For my Coonhound mix, I personally have Figo, and it’s been a great fit for us. While it can be more expensive for certain breeds like French Bulldogs, as one user mentioned it has “more than paid for itself every year” because of their dog’s health issues. They also offer discounts, like the one I recently got for being a Costco member.

I have Pets Best for my dog and they have reimbursed me over $4,000 in my dog’s second year. Even though their premiums increased, I still find it worth it because they pay out on claims. For my Golden Retriever, Pets Best is actually a top recommendation, especially because they have a short 14-day waiting period for hip dysplasia.

As a vet tech with over 10 years of experience, I personally use Lemonade, but I’ve also seen how Trupanion can be really good because it often covers a significant portion of very high bills, like a $13,000 neurosurgery where the owner only paid a couple hundred. The bottom line is to find a plan you can afford and don’t cancel it.

I have Healthy Paws and they’ve been pretty great. However, be aware that their prices can increase every year. For example, my monthly premium is going up by $10 this year, from $40 to $50, even though my dog isn’t even two years old yet. Another user reported their rates increasing from $46 to $60 for a dog under two.
